Using the User Setup Wizard

November 2008 | Series 5 Tips

When you turned on your V or Vmax for the first time you were introduced to a tool called the User Setup Wizard. This tool is designed to help you select a set of communication pages based on the age, communication ability level, and other characteristics of the individual who will be using the device. The User Setup Wizard also allows you to enter personal information (i.e. name, address, phone number, friends, and favorite activities) and preferences (i.e. font size, color) that will automatically be incorporated into the selected pages.

Why would you want to use the User Setup Wizard? First, the tool allows you to take advantage of the hundreds of pages that are created with vocabulary for a variety of different ages and communication ability levels. These pages are based on research from a variety of disciplines, clinical practice, and input from AAC users, speech-language pathologists, and family members. They are designed to encourage successful day-to-day communication, as well as language and literacy development/use. Second, the User Setup Wizard saves you time customizing those pages.

You can access the User Setup Wizard at any time and from anywhere in the V or Vmax:

  1. Select the Main Menu button in the title bar.
  2. Select Setup.
  3. Select Setup Menu.
  4. Select User Manager.
  5. Select Create New User. The system keyboard will open.
  6. You will be asked if you want to use the User Setup Wizard to specify the properties of the user. Select Yes.
  7. Use the system keyboard to enter a name for the new user, and select the OK button when finished.

It is important to note that the User Setup Wizard does not prevent you from adding messages or new pages. It also does not confine you to a limited number of pages. If you find that the suggested pages are not right for the AAC user (or that he quickly “outgrows” the suggested pages), follow these steps:

  1. Select the Main Menu icon in the title bar.
  2. Select Setup.
  3. Select Page Navigator.
  4. In the left viewport, you will see several folders including ones labeled Emergent, Context-Dependent, and Independent. One of the folders will be highlighted—that is the page set you are currently in. Select a folder with simpler or more advanced pages.
  5. In the right viewport, select the master page that you would like to open. It is located at the top of the list and is in capital letters.
  6. Select Go To Page at the bottom.
  7. When you are ready, use the Home button in the Title Bar at the top of the page to return to your typical set of pages

For more information on the User Setup Wizard; Emergent, Context-Dependent, and Independent pages; and getting started with your V or Vmax in general, visit the Implementation Toolkit and follow the Opening the Box Learning Path.
